In most of the world the accordion, in one of its many
forms, is a common and popular instrument, whose varying
tones and expression are much appreciated; in much of the
United States it has been set aside, along with so much of
the “old country” culture. Many U.S. listeners expect only
TV show polkas to come pouring out of every accordion, and
are surprised to hear French waltzes, Argentine Tangos,
delicate Celtic tunes or the powerful songs of the Balkans. For me the challenge is to seek out and learn interesting
and varied songs from around the world, songs that most of us
have never heard; but these musical treasures are not content to
stay in my living room, they are the happiest when they are
shared.
My main accordion, for those of you
who follow such things, is a
Bugari 288 Gold Plus. It has some of the finest handmade
reeds available in the world and is a pleasure to play and
listen to.
